Biography

Johan Gerard "Boy" Hayje (born May 3, 1949): A Dutch racing driver whose brief Formula One career belied his wider motorsport accomplishments. Born in the Netherlands, Hayje was the son of Amsterdam garage owner Jopie Hayje, who had been a speedway racer in the city's Olympic stadium after World War II. Boy's racing career began after winning the Dutch Formula Ford championship, after which he progressed through Formula 5000 and Formula 3. In 1976, he finished eighth in the British Formula 3 championship.

His Formula One debut came at the 1976 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, where he drove a privately entered Penske PC4 in his home race, though the car suffered a broken driveshaft after 63 laps. The following year proved even more challenging, as Hayje joined RAM Racing to drive a March 761. At the 1977 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, he started 21st and retired after 33 laps with gearbox failure. He then failed to qualify for both the Spanish and Monaco Grands Prix before making his final F1 start at the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder.

In total, Hayje entered seven Formula One World Championship Grands Prix but started only three, scoring no championship points. Following his F1 career, Hayje successfully transitioned to other forms of motorsport. He competed in the European Renault 5 Turbo championship and achieved his most notable career result at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1984, where he finished 12th overall and secured third place in the C2 class. This endurance racing success demonstrated that while Formula One may not have been his calling, Hayje possessed genuine racing talent that found better expression in sports car competition.

He remained active in various racing categories throughout the 1980s, building a respectable career beyond the pinnacle of motorsport.
