Biography

David Hampshire (December 29, 1917 - August 25, 1990): David Alan Hampshire was an English racing driver from Mickleover, Derbyshire, whose racing career spanned from before World War II through the early 1950s. Hampshire began his motorsport career in the late 1930s, driving a modified Maserati 6CL and establishing himself in British racing circles before the war interrupted his sporting pursuits. Following World War II, Hampshire resumed his racing career and competed in various events throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s, becoming particularly associated with Maserati racing cars. During the 1950 Formula One season, he participated in two World Championship Grands Prix, driving a Scuderia Ambrosiana Maserati 4CLT in various races.

His World Championship appearances came during Formula One's inaugural season, making him part of the sport's founding generation of drivers. While Hampshire did not score any championship points in his two World Championship starts, he found success in non-championship Formula One races. Later in the 1950 season, Hampshire achieved a notable victory by winning the 1950 Nottingham Trophy at Gamston, driving a Scuderia Ambrosiana Maserati 4CLT. This victory demonstrated his capability behind the wheel when competitive machinery was available.

Hampshire continued competing in various racing events through the early 1950s before eventually retiring from motorsport. He passed away on August 25, 1990, in Newton Solney, South Derbyshire, at the age of 72. Hampshire represents the generation of British racing drivers who competed in the formative years of Formula One, helping establish the sport while pursuing their passion for motor racing in an era when the sport was far more dangerous and less professionalized than it would later become.
