Eitel Cantoni (4 October 1906 - 22 February 1997): Uruguayan racing driver from Montevideo who competed in Formula One at the 1952 Indianapolis 500, which counted toward the World Championship from 1950-1960 despite being a separate series. Participated in one World Championship race without scoring points, finishing 16th at the 1952 Indy 500. Primarily competed in South American racing throughout his career, becoming one of Uruguay's pioneering motorsport figures. Raced in the Argentine Temporada series, a collection of races held in Argentina during the South American summer that attracted international drivers, achieving several strong finishes against European competition.
Also competed in the Turismo Carretera, South America's oldest stock car racing series, and various sports car races throughout Argentina and Uruguay. His participation at Indianapolis represented the era when the 500 was part of the Formula One World Championship, though most Indy drivers never competed in European Formula One races. Cantoni's single championship appearance connected him to Formula One history despite his career being entirely focused on American and South American racing. Lived to age 90, passing away in 1997, becoming one of Formula One's longest-lived former competitors.
Remembered in Uruguayan motorsport history as a pioneering figure who represented his country at the world's most prestigious motor race.
