Biography

Frank Armi (21 November 1918 - 23 August 1995): American racing driver from Denver, Colorado, who competed in Formula One at the Indianapolis 500 from 1955 to 1957. Participated in 3 World Championship races, all Indianapolis 500 events, achieving a best finish of 11th place at the 1955 Indy 500. At the 1955 Indianapolis 500, started 28th on the grid and finished 11th after completing 181 laps of the 200-lap race, demonstrating solid reliability and earning his best championship result. Returned to Indianapolis in 1956, starting 30th but retiring after 79 laps with mechanical problems.

Made his final Indianapolis 500 appearance in 1957, again starting deep in the field at 28th position and retiring after 87 laps with a burned piston. Scored no Formula One World Championship points from his three Indianapolis starts (points were awarded only to the top six finishers during the 1950s). Armi's racing career was built on American oval track racing, competing primarily on the USAC Championship Car circuit throughout the Southwestern and Western United States during the 1950s. His three Indianapolis 500 starts represented the pinnacle of his racing career and connected him to Formula One history during the decade when the 500 counted toward the World Championship.

Passed away on 23 August 1995 at age 76 in Denver. Represented the American oval specialists whose Formula One championship entries existed solely through Indianapolis 500 participation.
