Biography

George Constantine (22 February 1918 - 2 December 1968): American racing driver from California who competed in Formula One at the Indianapolis 500 in 1950 and 1952. Participated in 2 World Championship races without scoring points, both Indianapolis 500 events. Made his Indianapolis 500 and Formula One World Championship debut in the inaugural championship season of 1950, competing in the first race that counted toward the newly created World Championship. At the 1950 Indianapolis 500, retired from the race without completing significant distance, his championship debut ending in disappointment.

Returned to Indianapolis in 1952 for his second and final World Championship start, again retiring without a classified finish. Both of his Formula One championship appearances ended in retirements, scoring no points. Constantine's racing career was focused on American oval and dirt track racing during the 1940s and 1950s, competing primarily on the West Coast racing circuits. His two Indianapolis 500 starts represented his only participation in World Championship events, connecting him to Formula One history during the early years when Indianapolis was part of the championship.

Passed away on 2 December 1968 at age 50 in California. His Formula One 'career' exemplifies the statistical anomaly created by including Indianapolis 500 results in the World Championship, with American drivers who never intended to compete in European grand prix racing earning championship race starts.
