Biography

Georges Grignard (25 July 1905 - 7 December 1977): Auguste Georges Paul Grignard was a French racing driver and garage owner from Villeneuve-Saint-Georges who combined his business acumen with a passion for motorsport, particularly with Talbot-Lago machinery. A former Hotchkiss employee, Grignard operated his own garage business, which provided the financial foundation for his racing activities. Although he started racing in the 1920s with appearances in rallies, his most frequent and successful racing period came from the late 1940s onwards, once his garage business was properly established. In 1947, Grignard joined the Ecurie Vallee team but found himself largely sidelined after disposing of his Delahaye.

His fortunes changed in late 1948 when he finally took delivery of a long-awaited Talbot-Lago. Once united with his beloved car, Grignard raced it extensively over the next several seasons, becoming synonymous with the elegant French marque. His best results included third place at Pau in 1949 and sixth at Rouen in 1953, demonstrating his competitiveness in top-level racing. Grignard's greatest achievement came at the 1950 Paris Grand Prix, where he won the race run over 50 laps (314 kilometers / 195 miles) of the legendary Montlhéry Autodrome road circuit.

This victory at one of France's most prestigious races marked the pinnacle of his career and cemented his reputation as a skilled Talbot-Lago specialist. His Formula One World Championship appearance came at the 1951 Spanish Grand Prix at Pedralbes, where the Talbot-Lago stalwart entered his own 4.5-litre car. Unfortunately, he retired from the race without scoring championship points. Despite this setback, Grignard continued competing mainly in sports cars until 1955, after which he retired from racing to focus on his garage business.

In 1959, Grignard took advantage of an opportunity to purchase all the liquidated Talbot stock, subsequently acting as a supplier of Talbot parts to collectors around the world. This business venture allowed him to remain connected to the marque he had raced so passionately while serving the growing community of historic Talbot enthusiasts. Georges Grignard passed away on 7 December 1977 in Port-Marly at the age of 72, remembered as a dedicated Talbot-Lago privateer who achieved success through persistence and his deep connection with his chosen racing machinery.
