Biography

Jorge Alberto Daponte (5 June 1923 - 9 March 1963): Argentine racing driver from Buenos Aires who participated in two World Championship Formula One Grands Prix, appearing for the first time on 17 January 1954 and scoring no championship points. He drove a Maserati A6GCM/250F which was a 1953 works car converted by the factory for use by Daponte for the 1954 season. In the 1954 Argentine Grand Prix he retired with lubrication problems and at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza he was classified eleventh. He also participated in several non-Championship races, competing in a couple of non-championship events in 1954, finishing 4th in the Circuito di Pescara and 5th in the GP de Rouen-les Essarts.

Jorge Daponte was an Argentine Formula One driver who participated in two Grand Prix as well as the 1953 Indianapolis 500 and numerous non-championship races. He was a businessman before, during, and after racing until his death. Noted for his flamboyant shirts and dress sense, Daponte raced in both single-seaters and sportscars. Tragically, he died at age 39, possibly of suicide.
