Biography

Philip Fotheringham-Parker (September 22, 1907 - October 15, 1981): Born into British society, this wealthy amateur English racing driver epitomized the gentleman racer tradition that characterized much of pre-war and early post-war motorsport. Fotheringham-Parker's racing career spanned from the 1930s through the early 1950s, demonstrating both longevity and dedication to the sport he loved as a passionate hobby. During the 1930s and 1940s, he established himself as a regular competitor in various motorsport events throughout Britain, purchasing and campaigning his own racing machinery. His weapon of choice was a Maserati, which he raced with modest success during the immediate post-war era when he brought the car out of wartime storage.

One of his greatest pre-Formula One achievements came at the 1949 Wakefield Trophy race at the Curragh in Ireland, where he finished second in his Maserati, demonstrating his ability to compete against more established drivers. The pinnacle of Fotheringham-Parker's racing career came with his entry in the 1951 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, his sole World Championship Formula One race. Driving his privately owned Maserati 4CLT/48, he qualified for the race but was forced to retire due to an oil pipe problem, denying him the opportunity to showcase his abilities on Formula One's biggest stage. Despite this disappointment at the World Championship level, Fotheringham-Parker enjoyed considerably more success in non-championship Formula One events.

Later in 1951, he achieved a notable victory at the Scottish Grand Prix at Winfield, again driving his trusty Maserati, proving that the car and driver combination could be competitive in the right circumstances. This victory represented the high point of his racing achievements. Throughout his career, Fotheringham-Parker remained actively involved in the British racing scene, supporting motorsport as both a competitor and enthusiast. His participation represented the important role that wealthy amateur drivers played in sustaining motor racing during the challenging years of the 1930s and 1940s, and in helping to populate the grids during Formula One's formative seasons.

He passed away on October 15, 1981, at the age of 74, having lived a full life devoted to his passion for motorsport.
