Biography

Roberto Casimiro Mieres Dasso (3 December 1924 - 26 January 2012): Argentine racing driver who competed in 17 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix between 1953 and 1955, scoring 13 championship points and achieving multiple podium finishes driving for Maserati, before later representing Argentina at the 1960 Olympics in sailing. Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Mieres began his racing career in Argentine sports car competition, winning the national sports car championship before traveling to Europe. After winning the Argentine sports car championship, compatriots Juan Manuel Fangio and José Froilán González invited him to join them on a European campaign. In 1950, Mieres finished fourth at the Circuit des Nations in Geneva driving a Maserati 4CLT/48 Formula Two car, demonstrating his potential.

Mieres made his Formula One World Championship debut at the 1953 Dutch Grand Prix on 7 June 1953, driving for Gordini as a replacement for the injured Jean Behra. He competed in three races for Gordini that year before acquiring his own Maserati A6GCM for 1954. In 1954, after the tragic death of Argentine Maserati driver Onofre Marimón at the German Grand Prix, the Maserati factory team invited Mieres to join them—a significant honor. The move proved immediately successful: driving the Maserati 250F, Mieres scored fourth place finishes in both Switzerland and Spain, demonstrating that he belonged among the sport's elite.

He finished eighth in the 1954 World Championship. In 1955, continuing with the Maserati works team, Mieres achieved his best Formula One results. He finished fifth at the Argentine Grand Prix, fifth at Spa-Francorchamps (sharing the car with Jean Behra), and fourth at Zandvoort. His consistent points-scoring performances that season confirmed his status as a dependable and rapid driver, though he never achieved the breakthrough victory that might have elevated him to the sport's highest echelon.

After the 1955 season, Mieres' Formula One career wound down as Maserati focused on other drivers and his opportunities diminished. He returned to Argentina and pursued his other great passion: sailing. Remarkably, Mieres represented Argentina at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, competing in sailing events and demonstrating his athletic versatility. Mieres died on 26 January 2012 at age 87. Former Maserati colleagues remembered him as a skilled and courageous driver who represented Argentina with distinction during the sport's golden era of the 1950s.

He remains one of Argentina's most respected Formula One drivers, achieving solid results with Maserati during an intensely competitive period. Known for: Competing in 17 Formula One Grands Prix for Gordini and Maserati between 1953 and 1955, scoring 13 championship points with multiple top-five finishes, joining the Maserati works team after Onofre Marimón's death, and representing Argentina in sailing at the 1960 Olympics.
