Race Summary
Alberto Ascari continued his relentless march toward the championship with a dominant victory at the French Grand Prix at Rouen-Les-Essarts on July 6, 1952. The challenging circuit through the Normandy countryside provided a stern test of man and machine, with its combination of fast downhill sections, tricky corners, and minimal safety provisions. Ascari's Ferrari 500 proved perfectly suited to the demands of the circuit, and the Italian drove with the precision and speed that was becoming his trademark, leading a dominant Ferrari 1-2-3 finish.
Giuseppe Farina claimed his second consecutive second-place finish behind Ascari, the 1950 World Champion finding himself comprehensively outpaced by his younger teammate throughout the season. Piero Taruffi completed the podium for Ferrari, securing the Scuderia's first 1-2-3 finish of the season and demonstrating their overwhelming superiority in the Formula 2 era. The smaller, lighter cars were producing close racing and allowed drivers' skill to shine through more than the previous generation's powerful but cumbersome machines.
Rouen's street circuit character made it one of the more dangerous venues on the calendar, with stone walls, trees, and buildings lining the track with minimal run-off areas. The race was run at a furious pace despite the reduced power of Formula 2 cars, with several drivers crashing out after misjudging the circuit's tricky braking zones and off-camber corners. Ascari's second consecutive victory established him as the dominant force of 1952, and Ferrari's technical superiority was becoming increasingly apparent. With Fangio absent and no serious challenger emerging, Ascari's path to his first World Championship looked clear.
