Race Summary
Mark Webber claimed his fifth victory of the season with a commanding performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix, extending his championship lead heading into the summer break. The Australian controlled the race from start to finish at the twisty Hungaroring, holding off Fernando Alonso's charging Ferrari to demonstrate why he was the championship favorite. Webber's win capped a successful first half of the season for the veteran driver and sent him into the break with momentum.
Starting from second on the grid behind Vettel's pole position, Webber executed a perfect start and race strategy to seize the lead. The Australian managed his tires expertly around Budapest's demanding circuit, which features a combination of slow corners and limited overtaking opportunities. The Hungaroring's characteristics made track position crucial, and Webber held station at the front throughout, never giving Alonso a chance to attack. The Red Bull RB6's superior mechanical grip and downforce proved ideally suited to Hungary's tight, twisting layout, allowing Webber to control the pace perfectly.
Alonso drove a strong race to finish second for Ferrari, pushing Webber throughout but unable to find a way past. The Spaniard's consistency kept him firmly in championship contention going into the summer break. Vettel completed the podium in third place, setting both pole position and fastest lap to demonstrate the RB6's superior pace even when not winning. The race was relatively processional, with the no-refueling regulations and Hungary's characteristics limiting strategic variation. Webber's victory meant he led the championship by 14 points over Hamilton, with Vettel third and Alonso fourth - four drivers separated by just 28 points with nine races remaining. The incredibly tight title battle promised a dramatic second half to the season.
