Biography

Bob Scott (1928, Watsonville, California - 5 July 1954, Darlington, South Carolina) was an American racing driver whose brief career showed exceptional promise before being tragically cut short at age 25. Born in Watsonville, California, Scott was a natural athlete who lettered in several sports at Gardena High School, demonstrating the physical coordination and competitive spirit that would serve him well in racing. He got his first taste of motorsport with the competitive CRA roadsters at nearby Carrell Speedway in 1948. Known as 'Scotty,' he was popular among his competitors for his obvious potential but also for his quiet, modest demeanor, which endeared him to the racing community.

Scott raced in midget and sprint cars, quickly establishing himself as a driver to watch. His breakthrough came when veteran driver Johnnie Parsons helped him land a ride in Ernie Ruiz's top-line sprint car. In the Ruiz car, Scott stood out on the AAA tracks, earning a return trip to Indianapolis in 1952 after an earlier attempt. With Parsons' assistance, Scott secured the seat in Doc Morris' KK2000/Offy for the 1952 Indianapolis 500, made the race, and ran well before a broken driveshaft ended his day.

He participated in three Indianapolis 500 races between 1952 and 1954, with these appearances counting toward the Formula One World Championship as the Indy 500 was part of the F1 calendar from 1950-1960. Scott participated in three World Championship races but scored no championship points. In 1954, Scott was bumped from his initial qualifying position at Indianapolis but attempted to qualify in another car at the last minute. Only two months later, on 5 July 1954, Scott died from injuries suffered in a crash at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.

His accomplishments during his brief time at the top level of American motorsport remain but a glimpse of what might have been.
