Biography

Edmund Edward 'Eddie' Russo (19 November 1925 - 13 January 1986): American racing driver from Troy, New York, who competed in Formula One at the 1958 Indianapolis 500. Participated in one World Championship race, finishing 12th and earning one World Championship point (ninth through twelfth places scored fractional points under 1958's Indianapolis 500 scoring system). His sole championship point makes Russo one of few Formula One drivers to score points from a single career start. Russo's racing career was focused entirely on American open-wheel racing, competing on the USAC Championship Car trail throughout the 1950s and early 1960s.

Achieved multiple top-10 finishes on oval tracks and dirt tracks across the United States, demonstrating consistent if unspectacular pace. His 1958 Indianapolis 500 performance, finishing 12th after starting 17th on the grid, represented his best result in championship-counting competition. Competed in approximately 30 USAC Championship races throughout his career beyond Indianapolis. Retired from racing in the early 1960s as American open-wheel racing evolved and returned to upstate New York.

Passed away in 1986 at age 60. Russo exemplifies the American oval track specialists who earned Formula One World Championship points during Indianapolis' championship years despite never competing in or intending to compete in European grand prix racing, creating one of Formula One's most unusual statistical footnotes.
