Fabrizio Barbazza (April 2, 1963 - Present): Italian racing driver born in Monza who participated in Formula 1 for AGS and Minardi, named 1987 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year. After motocross in his teens, began racing Formula Monza in 1982. Won four Italian Formula 3 races in 1985 with Venturini, finishing third in the championship. Unable to afford Formula 3000, moved to America for American Racing Series with Arciero Racing, stunning the field by winning four races and the ARS title at first attempt.
At the 1987 Indianapolis 500, spun during the race but recovered to finish third, earning Rookie of the Year honors for both Indy 500 and Champ Car. For 1991, signed with struggling AGS F1 team at round three, replacing Stefan Johansson. Failed to qualify for all twelve races attempted before AGS shut down after both drivers failed to pre-qualify in Spain. Rejoined F1 with Minardi in 1993, bringing good budget and scoring points twice at Donington and Imola in his first four races before being replaced by Pierluigi Martini when money ran out.
In May 1995, suffered serious head and chest injuries in an accident with Jeremy Dale at Road Atlanta, leaving him in critical condition. Recovered but never returned to racing, starting a go-kart circuit in Monza and designing crash barriers. Moved to Cuba in 1998, currently running fishing resorts based in Cayo Santa Maria.
