Biography

Frederick Edward 'Fred' Gamble (26 March 1932 - 5 September 1997): American racing driver from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who competed in Formula One at the Indianapolis 500 from 1960 to 1963. Participated in 4 World Championship races, all Indianapolis 500 events which counted toward the Formula One championship from 1950-1960. Made his Indianapolis 500 debut in 1960, qualifying for the race and demonstrating competence on the famous oval. His best Indianapolis 500 finish came with 9th place in the 1962 event, completing the full 200 laps and earning a solid result in America's premier race.

Competed at Indianapolis again in 1961 and 1963, though with less successful results including retirements due to mechanical failures. Scored no Formula One World Championship points from his four Indianapolis starts (points were awarded only to the top six finishers during this era). Gamble's racing career was built entirely on American oval track racing, competing on the USAC Championship Car circuit throughout the late 1950s and 1960s. His four Indianapolis 500 starts represented the pinnacle of his racing career and connected him to Formula One history during the decade when the 500 counted toward the World Championship.

After retiring from active competition, remained involved in American motorsport circles. Passed away on 5 September 1997 at age 65 in Pennsylvania. Represented the generation of American oval specialists whose Formula One 'careers' existed solely through Indianapolis 500 participation, highlighting the unique relationship between American and European racing during the 1950s and early 1960s.
