Biography

Gastón Hugo Mazzacane (8 May 1975 - Present): Argentine racing driver from La Plata, named after late touring car racer Gastón Perkins by his father Hugo. Served as Minardi test driver in 1999 before racing full-time in 2000 alongside Marc Gené. Participated in 21 Formula 1 Grands Prix across 2000-2001, scoring no championship points. Debut year saw retirement in Australia with broken gearbox, 10th in Brazil, eighth at Nürburgring, and completed 11 of 17 races, ranking third for most kilometers raced despite difficult machinery.

Moved to Prost for 2001, driving the AP04 for four races with three retirements and 12th in Malaysia. Team boss Alain Prost dismissed him after San Marino, invoking a performance clause, replaced by Luciano Burti. Often labeled a 'pay driver.' Held distinction as Argentina's last F1 driver until Franco Colapinto's debut in 2024, representing a 23-year gap for Argentine representation in Formula 1.
