Biography

Mikko Kozarowitzky (17 June 1948 - Present): Finnish racing driver from Helsinki who attempted to enter two Formula One World Championship Grands Prix in 1977 driving a RAM Racing March 761-Ford but failed to qualify on both occasions, making him one of the few Finnish drivers to compete during the 1970s era. He participated in pre-qualifying for the 1977 British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 16 July 1977, where he was unable to set a competitive time, finishing well off the pace required to make the grid. His second and final attempt came at the 1977 German Grand Prix at the daunting Nürburgring Nordschleife on 31 July 1977, where again he was unable to qualify, this time in particularly challenging conditions on the 14-mile circuit.

These two non-qualification attempts represented the entirety of Kozarowitzky's Formula One career, and he never started a World Championship Grand Prix. The RAM Racing team he drove for was a small British privateer outfit owned by Mike Ralph and John Macdonald that struggled with limited resources throughout the late 1970s. RAM would later achieve more prominence in the 1980s under different management. Prior to his Formula One attempts, Kozarowitzky competed in various European racing series, though details of his junior career remain limited.

His Formula One appearances came during an era when numerous pay drivers and privateers attempted to break into the sport, often with obsolete machinery and insufficient funding, making pre-qualifying and qualifying extremely difficult. Finland would not see another Formula One driver until Keke Rosberg burst onto the scene in the early 1980s, ultimately winning the 1982 World Championship. Following his Formula One attempts, Kozarowitzky returned to national-level racing in Finland and largely disappeared from the international motorsport scene. His brief foray into Formula One remains a footnote in the history of Finnish motorsport, representing the struggles faced by drivers from smaller racing nations attempting to break into the sport's highest level during the 1970s without major backing or competitive equipment.

Known for his determination to attempt Formula One despite the overwhelming odds and lack of competitive machinery, Kozarowitzky's story exemplifies the challenges faced by privateer drivers in an increasingly professional and expensive sport.
