Biography

Frederick Anthony Owen "Tony" Gaze (3 February 1920 - 29 July 2013) was an Australian racing driver and Royal Air Force fighter pilot who competed in Formula One during the early 1950s. Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Gaze became a distinguished fighter pilot during World War II, flying Spitfires with the RAF and becoming one of Australia's highest-scoring aces with 12.5 aerial victories. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar for his wartime service.

After the war, Gaze remained in Britain and pursued motor racing, competing in various categories including Formula One. He participated in three World Championship Grands Prix between 1952 and 1953, driving for the HWM team. His best result came at the 1952 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, where he finished tenth. Gaze also competed in numerous non-championship Formula One races and sports car events throughout the early 1950s, racing Aston Martins, HWMs, and other machinery.

He became known for his aggressive driving style, honed during his wartime fighter pilot experience. Gaze returned to Australia in the late 1950s and continued his involvement in motorsport, becoming a successful businessman in the automotive industry. He remained active in historic racing and automotive events for many decades, often appearing at reunions and commemorations honoring both his wartime service and racing career. As one of the few Formula One drivers with a distinguished combat record, Gaze represented the generation of post-war racing drivers who transitioned from aerial combat to motor racing.

He maintained his connection to both aviation and motorsport communities throughout his long life, passing away in July 2013 at the age of 93.
