Race Summary
Jacques Villeneuve secured a vital victory at the Hungaroring, fending off challenges from Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert in a tactical race on Budapest's tight and twisty circuit. The Canadian started from pole and controlled the race through superior strategy, demonstrating Williams' strength at slower speed circuits. Former champion Hill delivered his best result for Arrows with second place, showing flashes of his 1996 form, while Herbert took third for Sauber-Petronas with a well-judged drive.
Michael Schumacher could only manage fourth place after struggling with Ferrari's handling in the unique conditions of the Hungaroring, allowing Villeneuve to extend his championship lead to 15 points. The result demonstrated Villeneuve's versatility, winning on both high-speed and technical circuits, and put pressure back on Schumacher heading into the crucial final races of the European season.
