Race Summary

Mika Häkkinen produced a brilliant performance to win at Silverstone, claiming his second victory of the season and giving McLaren a much-needed boost. The two-time World Champion controlled the British Grand Prix from the front, managing the challenging Silverstone circuit perfectly in what would prove to be his final Grand Prix victory. Michael Schumacher finished second for Ferrari, while Rubens Barrichello completed the podium in third.

Häkkinen's victory was poignant, as the Finnish star would announce later in the season that he was taking a sabbatical from F1 - a break that would become permanent retirement. Despite finishing second, Schumacher extended his championship lead with McLaren's struggles meaning they couldn't mount a sustained challenge. The result at Silverstone provided temporary relief for McLaren, but Ferrari's consistency and reliability advantage meant the championship battle was effectively over. Häkkinen's masterclass at the British track gave fans one final reminder of his exceptional talent before he stepped away from the sport.
