Eppie Wietzes

Egbert Wytze 'Eppie' Wietzes (28 May 1938 - 14 March 2020): Canadian racing driver from Ontario who competed in Formula One at the 1967 Canadian Grand Prix. Participated in one World Championship race, retiring on lap 46 with an oil leak while driving a privately-entered Lotus. Made history by becoming one of the first Canadian drivers to compete in the Canadian Grand Prix when it became a Formula One World Championship event in 1967 at Mosport Park. His Formula One appearance was a one-off entry supported by Canadian sponsors hoping to field a local driver at Canada's premier racing event.

Before Formula One, Wietzes competed successfully in Canadian national motorsport, winning races in Formula Libre and sports car competitions. Achieved considerable success in Canadian club racing, becoming a respected competitor in the Ontario region. More successful in sports car racing than single-seaters, competing in various endurance events throughout North America during the 1960s and 1970s. Also competed in the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) series, the premier North American sports car championship, achieving several strong finishes in the lower-powered categories.

Remained active in Canadian motorsport throughout his life as both a competitor in historic racing events and as a supporter of young Canadian racing talent. Post-racing career, Wietzes worked in automotive businesses and remained connected to Ontario's motorsport community. Passed away in 2020 at age 81. Though his single Formula One start resulted in a retirement, Wietzes' participation represented Canadian involvement in the world championship during Formula One's expansion into North America.
