Biography

Markus Winkelhock (13 June 1980 - Present): German racing driver from Stuttgart and member of a racing family, being the son of Manfred Winkelhock and nephew of Joachim Winkelhock, both Formula One drivers in the 1980s. After success in junior formulae including German Formula 3, he served as test and reserve driver for Midland F1 in 2006 and Spyker in 2007. His sole F1 race came at the 2007 European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, where he created Formula One history in dramatic fashion. Starting last on the grid, a strategic gamble on wet tyres allowed him to lead the race by the end of lap one, the only driver ever to start last and lead in his debut Grand Prix.

He built a 19-second lead by lap two before the race was red-flagged, and became the only driver to start both first and last in the same Grand Prix. However, he retired with hydraulic problems after the restart. Despite this remarkable performance, Spyker chose not to retain him for sponsorship reasons. He later won the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship.
