Biography

Roger Searle Penske (20 February 1937 - Present): American former racing driver and business magnate known as "The Captain" who competed in two Formula One World Championship Grands Prix in 1961 and 1962 before building one of the most successful motorsport empires in history, including Team Penske and ownership of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Penske demonstrated business acumen and competitive drive from an early age. He began racing sports cars in the late 1950s while studying business at Lehigh University, quickly establishing himself as a talented and intelligent driver. Sports Illustrated named him SCCA Driver of the Year in 1961, recognizing his dominance in American sports car racing.

Penske made his Formula One debut at the 1961 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen driving a Cooper, finishing eighth. He returned to the same race in 1962 driving a Lotus 24, finishing ninth. Both performances were respectable given that these were essentially one-off appearances at his home race without the benefit of a full season's development. However, Penske recognized that his long-term success lay in business rather than driving.

He retired from racing in 1965 at age 28 to focus on building his automotive business empire. Penske founded the Penske Corporation, a diversified holding company with interests in automotive retail, truck leasing, logistics, and motorsport. In racing, he established Team Penske in 1966, which became the most successful team in IndyCar history with 20 Indianapolis 500 victories. Team Penske also competed successfully in NASCAR, winning multiple championships.

In a landmark acquisition, Penske purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indianapolis 500, and the entire IndyCar Series from the Hulman family on 4 November 2019 for an undisclosed amount, becoming the steward of American open-wheel racing's most hallowed venue. His business ventures extended far beyond motorsport, building a multi-billion dollar corporate empire. Penske's combination of racing success as a driver, team owner, and business leader makes him one of motorsport's most influential figures. His brief Formula One career represents merely a footnote to accomplishments that transformed American motorsport and built a business dynasty.

Known for: Being the most successful team owner at Indianapolis with 20 victories, founding Team Penske in 1966, purchasing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar Series in 2019, building a multi-billion dollar business empire, and earning the nickname "The Captain" for his leadership and success.
