Race Summary
Jacky Ickx finally ended Jochen Rindt's winning streak with a decisive victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, leading home teammate Clay Regazzoni for a perfect Ferrari 1-2 finish. The Belgian driver controlled the race from the front at the newly-opened Österreichring, Ferrari's powerful flat-12 engine proving perfectly suited to the fast, flowing Austrian circuit. Regazzoni's second place on his championship debut for Ferrari announced the Swiss driver as a serious talent, while Rolf Stommelen claimed third for Brabham.
The race marked Ferrari's first victory of the season and provided much-needed momentum for the Italian team, which had struggled to match the Lotus 72's pace. The Österreichring's high-speed nature played to the Ferrari 312B's strengths, with the car's powerful engine and good straight-line speed allowing Ickx to build a comfortable advantage. Regazzoni's impressive debut podium in only his fourth Grand Prix demonstrated the 31-year-old rookie's exceptional talent and gave Ferrari a formidable driver pairing heading into the season's final races.
Rindt's winning run had ended, but his championship position remained strong with a healthy points advantage heading to Monza. The Austrian had driven brilliantly throughout his four-race winning streak, and even in defeat at Austria, he had pushed Ickx hard before a mechanical issue forced his retirement. Ferrari's 1-2 finish provided a boost for the tifosi heading to Monza, where the Italian team hoped to continue their resurgence. However, the joy of victory in Austria would soon be overshadowed by the tragedy that awaited at the following race.
