Race Summary
Alain Prost dominated the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, leading a Ferrari one-two and delaying Ayrton Senna's championship celebration for at least one more race. The Frenchman controlled the race from pole position, demonstrating Ferrari's continued competitiveness even though the championship battle had effectively been decided. Nigel Mansell completed the Ferrari victory in second place, with the Scuderia showing the form that had made them genuine challengers for much of the season.
Senna could only manage fourth place after a frustrating afternoon, unable to secure the points needed to clinch the championship mathematically. The Brazilian suffered from tire wear issues and struggled to find a comfortable balance with his McLaren throughout the race. Despite his disappointment, Senna remained calm, knowing that the title would almost certainly be his at the next round in Japan, barring a catastrophic failure.
Alessandro Nannini finished third for Benetton, delivering another strong result for the Italian team and demonstrating his consistent pace throughout the season. The Spanish Grand Prix highlighted that while Senna's championship triumph was inevitable, both Ferrari and Benetton remained capable of challenging McLaren on their day. As the teams prepared for the penultimate round at Suzuka, all eyes turned to Japan, where Senna would have his opportunity to secure the title and settle scores with Prost.
