Race Summary
Nigel Mansell bounced back from his Canadian retirement with a commanding victory at the French Grand Prix, resuming normal service and leading Williams to another dominant one-two finish. The Englishman controlled proceedings from pole position at Magny-Cours, never seriously challenged as he reasserted his authority over the championship. Mansell's sixth win of the season demonstrated that Canada had been an aberration rather than a sign of weakness.
Riccardo Patrese finished second for Williams after a solid supporting drive, securing maximum constructors' points for the team. The Italian's consistent performances were helping Williams build an insurmountable lead in both championships. Martin Brundle claimed third place for Benetton, delivering a strong result on his return to Grand Prix racing after replacing an injured teammate.
The race put Mansell back on track for the championship and reminded everyone of Williams' overwhelming technical superiority. With his lead restored and extended, the Englishman needed just one more strong result to mathematically secure the title. The dominant performance at France's home circuit also delighted Williams' engine partner Renault, making it a perfect result for the Anglo-French alliance.
