Race Summary

Jacques Villeneuve made it two victories in a row with another commanding performance in Argentina, starting from pole and controlling the race at the Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez circuit in Buenos Aires. Eddie Irvine delivered a strong performance for Ferrari to finish second, taking advantage of Michael Schumacher's retirement to claim his best result of the early season. Ralf Schumacher announced his talent with an impressive third place for Jordan-Peugeot, his first career podium at just his second Grand Prix start.

The race solidified Villeneuve's championship lead and underlined Williams' early-season dominance, with the Canadian winning two of the first three races. Michael Schumacher's second retirement in three races left him trailing in the championship, putting pressure on Ferrari to improve reliability. Ralf Schumacher's podium suggested the younger brother had the talent to match Michael's success, beginning a sibling rivalry that would define much of their careers.
