Race Summary
Kimi Raikkonen delivered a dominant performance at the Monaco Grand Prix, controlling the race from pole position on the streets of Monte Carlo to secure his second consecutive victory and establish himself as a genuine championship contender. The Finnish driver led home Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber in a Williams one-two for second and third, while championship leader Fernando Alonso could only manage fourth, allowing Raikkonen to close the points gap in the title race.
Starting from pole with a lap of 1:16.681, Raikkonen made a perfect start and immediately pulled away from the field through Casino Square and the Swimming Pool chicane. The McLaren MP4-20's superior downforce and mechanical grip proved perfectly suited to Monaco's tight, twisting layout, and Raikkonen exploited every advantage. His pace was relentless, and he managed his Michelin tires expertly around the notoriously demanding street circuit where tire preservation was crucial. Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap, showing Ferrari's improving pace, but the German couldn't challenge for the podium positions.
Heidfeld drove a brilliant race to secure second place for Williams, marking a breakthrough result for the German and demonstrating the BMW-powered team's competitiveness. Webber completed an impressive Williams one-two for the podium positions, giving the Grove-based team their best result of the season. Alonso's fourth-place finish limited the championship damage but highlighted Renault's struggles on high-downforce circuits where the R25's aero efficiency advantage was less pronounced. Raikkonen's second straight victory confirmed McLaren as a major threat, and the Finn's combination of raw speed and racecraft had him firmly in championship contention. However, the reliability gremlins that would plague his season lurked just around the corner, waiting to derail what could have been a title challenge.
