Biography

Bill Moss (4 September 1933, Luton, Bedfordshire, England - 13 January 2010) was a British racing driver whose single Formula One appearance belied a more accomplished career in other racing categories. Moss first gained attention with his fearless handling of the R5B E.R.A. 'Remus,' which he drove through the end of the 1958 season. Before that, he had competed in a 1929 1500cc Alfa Romeo and the R1A E.

R.A., demonstrating his affinity for historic racing machinery. His equipment choices reflected the evolution of British motorsport in the late 1950s: he purchased a DB3S Aston Martin, though this proved unsuccessful and short-lived, followed by a Lister-Jaguar. He also drove a Formula 2 Cooper for a private team, showing his versatility across different racing categories. Moss entered one World Championship Formula One race, the 1959 British Grand Prix at Aintree, with his United Racing Stable Cooper T51, a Formula 2 car.

Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the race, ending his Formula One aspirations. Despite this setback, Moss achieved his most significant success in 1961 when he became British Formula Junior Champion, demonstrating that his talent was better suited to the junior formulae where he could compete more effectively. It is important to note that Bill Moss is not related to Stirling Moss, the legendary Grand Prix winner who was one of the most famous British racing drivers of the same era. Bill Moss remained active in British motorsport circles throughout the 1960s, contributing to the club racing scene that formed the backbone of British motorsport during this period.
