Biography

David Prophet (October 9, 1937 - March 29, 1981): An English privateer racing driver, successful businessman, and pilot who competed in Formula One and sports car racing during the 1960s. Prophet participated in two Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, making his debut on December 28, 1963, at the season-opening South African Grand Prix (held on New Year's Day 1964), driving a Brabham-Climax. His second and final championship appearance came at the 1965 South African Grand Prix, where he finished fourteenth driving a Brabham BT10. Although he did not score any World Championship points, Prophet was a regular and competitive participant in non-championship Formula One races during the 1960s.

In 1963, he switched to a Brabham BT6 and achieved victories at Snetterton and Goodwood in non-championship races, demonstrating his capability when racing against top-level competition. Beyond Formula One, Prophet competed successfully in sports car racing and was known for his all-around driving ability. His business success allowed him to fund his racing activities as a privateer, competing for the love of the sport rather than financial necessity. Prophet was also an accomplished pilot, holding a helicopter license and regularly flying his own aircraft.

Tragically, it was this passion for aviation that claimed his life. On March 29, 1981, shortly after watching the International Trophy Formula 2 race at Silverstone Circuit, Prophet and three passengers were killed when his helicopter crashed immediately after taking off from the circuit. The accident occurred as they were departing Silverstone, turning what had been an enjoyable day at the races into a devastating tragedy. Prophet was just 43 years old at the time of his death.

He is remembered as a talented privateer racer who competed successfully at the highest levels of motorsport while maintaining his business interests and pursuing his passion for aviation, embodying the spirit of the gentleman racer era.
