Giovanni de Riu (10 March 1925 - 11 December 2008): Italian racing driver from Macomer on the island of Sardinia whose real name was actually Deriu but is always listed as De Riu. A privateer and semi-regular road racer with a relatively short racing career, his Formula One involvement was extremely limited—he failed to qualify for the 1954 Italian Grand Prix with a privately-entered Maserati, making him one of Formula 1's 'forgotten' drivers who never officially started a race. After racing, De Riu became a key figure in the CSAI (Commissione Sportiva Automobilistica Italiana), the Italian motorsport governing body.
