Biography

James Robert Stewart (6 March 1931 - 3 January 2008): British racing driver from Scotland, the elder brother of Jackie Stewart, who participated in a single Formula One World Championship Grand Prix. He gained his first racing experience driving an MG in sprints and hill climb races before moving to a higher level through national sports car events, driving a Healey Silverstone in 1951 and 1952. During this period he was doing his National Service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), though his commanding officer was an avid motor racing fan and Stewart was allowed to race at weekends. He qualified a Cooper T20 fifteenth for the 1953 British race at Silverstone but spun off the wet track while running sixth on lap 79 of 90 laps.

He also competed in three other non-championship races driving a Cooper for Ecurie Ecosse in 1953. He became an integral part of Ecurie Ecosse, racing their Jaguar C-Type to three wins at Thruxton and six podiums at Charterhall, Ibsley, Thruxton, and Snetterton. During the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring he crashed the D-Type and was trapped under the car for 10 minutes before help arrived, after which he decided to retire. Stewart later worked in the garage industry and worked closely with anti-alcohol projects in Scotland.
