Biography

Marco Apicella (October 7, 1965 - Present): Italian racing driver born near Bologna who holds one of F1's shortest career records, lasting less than 800 meters. Began competing in Formula Three in 1984, taking victory for Scuderia Coloni in the first two rounds of the 1986 Italian Formula Three season. Moved to First Racing in 1988, and in 1989 finished fourth in the championship behind Jean Alesi, Erik Comas, and Eric Bernard despite not winning a race. Strong performances in Japan during 1992 and early 1993 earned him a Jordan F1 drive for his home race at the 1993 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with team boss Eddie Jordan wanting to try up-and-coming F3000 drivers, replacing Thierry Boutsen.

Qualified 23rd, half a second behind teammate Rubens Barrichello who set times after the circuit became less damp. Retired at the first corner of the first lap after a multi-car collision when JJ Lehto took him out, also eliminating Barrichello. His F1 career lasted less than 800 meters. Replaced by Emanuele Naspetti for Portugal. Later won the 1994 Japanese Formula 3000 Championship driving for Dome.

After racing in GT cars and endurance racing, eventually retired from motorsport and currently serves as a racing instructor and sales representative for Stilo race helmet company.
