Biography

Ralph David Firman Jr. (20 May 1975 - Present): British-born racing driver who competed under Irish citizenship (through his mother Angela) for Jordan in the 2003 Formula One season. Son of Ralph Firman Sr., who co-founded Van Diemen racecar constructor with Ross Ambrose (father of V8 Supercars champion Marcos). Educated at Gresham's School from 1988-1993, he went straight into racing, finishing second in the 1995 British F3 championship before winning the 1996 title and the prestigious 1996 Macau Grand Prix controversially.

He dominated Japanese Formula Nippon from 1997-2002, achieving six pole positions, four fastest laps, seven wins, and the 2002 championship. Brought into Jordan for 2003 after Eddie Irvine declined their offer, Firman scored his only point at the Spanish Grand Prix. He suffered a massive 180mph accident at the Hungaroring when his rear wing detached, forcing him to miss the Hungarian and Italian Grands Prix, where he was replaced by Zsolt Baumgartner. He won the 2007 Japan Super GT GT500 championship with Daisuke Ito for ARTA team, becoming the first to clinch the title before the final race.

He also drove for A1 Team Ireland from August 2005.
