Race Summary
Ayrton Senna extended his winning streak with a dominant victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, demonstrating McLaren's superiority on the power-sensitive Montreal track. Starting from pole position, Senna controlled the race from the front, managing his tires and fuel perfectly to claim his third consecutive win and move into a commanding lead in the championship. The Brazilian's flawless performance highlighted his growing confidence and the McLaren MP4/5B's versatility across different circuit types.
Nelson Piquet finished second for Benetton, delivering the team's best result of the season and demonstrating that the Ford-powered B190 had pace on faster circuits. The three-time World Champion drove a measured race, conserving his tires and staying out of trouble to collect six valuable championship points. Nigel Mansell rounded out the podium in third place for Ferrari, though both he and teammate Alain Prost struggled to match the pace of the leading McLaren.
Prost's fourth-place finish meant he fell further behind Senna in the championship standings, with the points gap beginning to look ominous for Ferrari's championship hopes. The race underlined McLaren-Honda's technical superiority, particularly in terms of power delivery and reliability. As the teams headed to Mexico, Senna appeared to be building an unstoppable momentum, much to Prost's frustration.
