Race Summary

Ayrton Senna halted Alain Prost's winning streak with a dominant victory at Hockenheim, reasserting McLaren's superiority on power-sensitive circuits and stabilizing his championship challenge. The Brazilian led from pole position and controlled the race with authority, using the Honda engine's superior power delivery down Hockenheim's long straights to build an unassailable advantage. Senna's victory was crucial psychologically, proving that he could respond to Prost's pressure and that McLaren remained the team to beat.

Alessandro Nannini delivered an excellent second place for Benetton, capitalizing on Ferrari's struggles to claim the team's best result of the season. The Italian drove brilliantly to hold off Gerhard Berger's McLaren in the closing stages, demonstrating the racecraft that had made him one of the paddock's most respected drivers. Berger's third place salvaged points for McLaren after starting from the second row.

Prost could only manage fourth place after a difficult weekend for Ferrari, with the 641/2 struggling to find the right balance on Hockenheim's unique layout. The result meant Prost's championship surge had been checked, though he remained within striking distance of Senna. The German Grand Prix underlined that while Ferrari had closed the gap to McLaren, the Japanese manufacturer's power advantage remained decisive on fast circuits.
