Race Summary

Ayrton Senna delivered a commanding victory at Spa-Francorchamps, leading McLaren to another one-two finish and moving to the brink of securing his third World Championship. The Brazilian mastered the challenging Belgian circuit with characteristic brilliance, controlling the race from pole position despite the Williams cars' superior straight-line speed on Spa's long straights. Senna's sixth victory of the season demonstrated his complete dominance and showcased why he remained the benchmark driver in Formula 1.

Gerhard Berger secured second place for McLaren, completing a perfect team result that all but sealed the Constructors' Championship for the Woking-based team. The Austrian drove a solid race to fend off challenges from behind, though he was never in position to seriously threaten his teammate's superiority. Nelson Piquet finished third for Benetton in what would be his final season in Formula 1, the three-time World Champion demonstrating he could still deliver competitive performances despite being in the twilight of his illustrious career.

The race was notable for a first-lap incident involving both Williams drivers at La Source hairpin, which eliminated Nigel Mansell from contention and severely damaged Riccardo Patrese's race. The contact between teammates was a costly error for Williams in their pursuit of McLaren, handing Senna an easier path to victory. With just five races remaining and a commanding points advantage, Senna's third title appeared inevitable.
