Race Summary
Damon Hill claimed victory at his home Grand Prix at Silverstone, but the race was overshadowed by a controversial incident involving Michael Schumacher. Hill started from pole and dominated the race, but the weekend's headline came when Schumacher overtook Hill on the formation lap, received a five-second stop-and-go penalty, and then controversially ignored black flags shown to him for multiple laps before finally serving the penalty. Jean Alesi finished second for Ferrari, while Mika Häkkinen took third for McLaren in an otherwise straightforward race.
The black flag incident sparked massive controversy and a stewards' inquiry. Schumacher was initially disqualified from the race results, then given a two-race ban that would sideline him for the Italian and Portuguese Grands Prix. Benetton claimed confusion over whether the black flags were intended for them, but the FIA was unequivocal in their punishment. Hill's victory reduced Schumacher's championship lead to 21 points, but the German's absence from the next two races presented a golden opportunity for the Williams driver to close the gap further.
