Race Summary
Jacques Villeneuve took a commanding victory at the A1-Ring in Austria, reasserting his championship credentials with a dominant display from start to finish. Starting from pole position, the Canadian controlled the race and extended his points lead with just three races remaining. David Coulthard finished second for McLaren with another consistent points finish, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen completed an excellent day for Williams with third place, securing a one-three for the Anglo-German team.
Michael Schumacher could only manage sixth place after struggling with Ferrari's setup throughout the weekend, allowing Villeneuve to build what looked like a decisive nine-point championship advantage. With races in Luxembourg, Japan, and the European GP finale at Jerez to come, Villeneuve appeared in control of his destiny, needing only to finish ahead of Schumacher in the remaining events to secure his first World Championship.
