Race Summary

Jacques Villeneuve secured his sixth victory of 1997 at the Nürburgring, extending his championship lead to 13 points with just two races remaining. The Canadian drove a controlled race from start to finish, managing his tires and fuel perfectly in difficult conditions. Jean Alesi finished second for Benetton with another strong result in what had been an excellent season for the Frenchman, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen took third for Williams after a steady drive.

Michael Schumacher could only manage fourth place despite fighting hard throughout, leaving him needing to win the final two races and hope for Villeneuve to encounter problems if he was to claim the championship. The Luxembourg GP effectively put Villeneuve in the driver's seat, requiring only a points finish at the Jerez finale to secure his first World Championship regardless of Schumacher's result.
