Ian Ashley Stewart (15 July 1929 - 26 August 2016): British racing driver from Belfast, Northern Ireland, who participated in one Formula One World Championship Grand Prix. Made his sole Formula One appearance at the 1953 British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 18 July 1953, driving a Cooper T20-Bristol. Qualified for the race at his home grand prix, demonstrating sufficient pace to make the grid at Silverstone. Retired from the race after 43 laps with magneto failure, his Formula One championship career ending with a single retirement.
Scored no championship points from his brief Formula One appearance. Beyond Formula One, competed in various British national motorsport events during the early 1950s, racing sports cars and single-seaters. His single Formula One entry represented the era when talented national-level drivers received opportunities to compete in world championship events, particularly at their home grand prix. After his brief Formula One appearance, continued racing in British club events before eventually retiring from active competition.
Passed away on 26 August 2016 at age 87, achieving remarkable longevity and outliving nearly all his contemporaries from 1950s Formula One. Though his Formula One career consisted of a single retirement, Stewart was part of the pioneering generation that competed in the world championship during its earliest years, when the sport was still finding its identity and infrastructure.
