Race Summary
The inaugural Dallas Grand Prix descended into chaos under brutal Texas heat, producing one of Formula 1's most notorious races. Keke Rosberg survived the attrition to claim victory for Williams-Honda, though he was nearly unconscious from heat exhaustion and dehydration. The race was run on a temporary circuit through the Dallas Fair Park in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with the rough surface breaking up and causing numerous mechanical failures. Rene Arnoux took second for Ferrari, while Elio de Angelis completed an impressive podium for Lotus.
Both McLaren drivers retired in the brutal conditions - Prost with brake failure and Lauda with engine problems - allowing their rivals to close the championship gap further. The race became infamous for drivers struggling with heat exhaustion, with many unable to continue and others barely conscious in their cockpits. Several drivers, including Nigel Mansell, pushed their cars toward the finish line after running out of fuel or suffering mechanical failure. The Dallas Grand Prix was never repeated, remembered as a low point in Formula 1's American expansion efforts and a reminder that not all venues were suitable for Grand Prix racing.
